For a while my peeps on Facebook have been asking about more content about protection magick and with Samhain season upon us and the veil growing thin I figured this was the perfect time to do a little dive into this important and much-requested subject. Fortunately, protection magick can be as complicate or as simple as you want. Most Witchy Mamas are somewhere in the hedgewitchery arena in terms of how they cast their magick (with everyday rituals and ingredients without elaborate ritual), which is my favorite way to do — being a hedge witch myself!

Most home protection magick and spells inside the home involve hanging things in strategic places within the home. If you have in-laws or family that you aren’t out of the broom closet with yet that can seem scary, but fortunately there are ways to decorate with protection magick in mind that may not even trip the radar. Many of these things have even been absorbed into common decorating with most people having no idea the symbolism behind it!Most home protection magick and spells inside the home involve hanging things in strategic places within the home. A Starry Spell - In the past several years this metal/tin stars have become super popular in decorating, especially for those people who prefer a more rustic aesthetic. Some have rings around them and some don’t, but either way the magick of the star remains. The five-pointed star has long been a symbol of protection and when you place one in or on your home (or adorn your body with it as jewelry or even tattoos) you are tapping into a subtle type of protection magick; a symbol that has been accumulating the energy and intention of protection for hundreds, maybe thousands of years.

Most commonly these stars are found on the outsides of homes, but you can place one anywhere. Over your front door, over your fireplace, hanging in your living room or bedroom — the sky is the limit

Sweeping Away Intruders - Luckily for us, it is the time of year when brooms become part of normal, everyday decor. I know the grocery stores near me carry those delicious-smelling cinnamon brooms in autumn which are the perfect gateway into utilize the broom for protection magick.A lot of the magickal correspondences that we apply for spell ingredients have, if we can research their history, a direct correlation to their mundane use. In the case of brooms, they are using for sweeping away dirt. It only makes sense that they can also be used to sweep away negative energy and keep away unwanted visitors.

Traditionally, the broom is placed bristle-side up next to or mounted over a door. The broom hung accordingly is said to ward off negative energy. Plus, if you’re using the cinnamon variety it will welcome any visitors with a lovely, festive scent too!

Embrace Your Inner Chef - Especially if you are big into cooking you can totally get away with this one: hang drying herbs in your home and (particularly) your kitchen! One of the most common magickal herbs in my area (and probably yours, too) is actually excellent for protection magick and banishing “evil spirits”. It’s super easy to come by and hanging it around your home can be the perfect protection charm.Of course there are lots of other herbs that you can grow for culinary purposes that work great for magick, too. Rosemary especially is a great herb for protection magick and doesn’t require a ton of watering. Great for the busy Witchy Mama that needs low maintenance plant babies!

And of course there are things to be done that are less obvious that can be done such as sprinkling salt across windowsils, doorways, and the end of your driveway. (Or, I would argue, the assigned parking spots you use if you live in an apartment/condo that do things that way.) Windows and doors can be anointed with special oils or waters, too. (Like the one that come in my Home Blessing Kit!)

Have you ever done a home blessing before? How did you do it and what sorts of things do you use in your home on the regular to keep the energy vibing high? Let me know in the comments below!
